Morning report E/330 for July 16, 1944

Record of events:
Left position 0700 to move forward for attack. Advanced within 550 yards and met resistance. Fought hard for LD and arrived 1500. Advanced on for objective. One group of enemy near a house wanted to surrender but refused to come forward. We opened fire with mortars and small arms and they asked again to surrender. Two of our German speaking men were sent forward. About 40 of the enemy were willing to surrender, but one officer present refused to allow it. Our two men returned to our lines and the battle continued. Pushed through La Barre. Halted and dug in. Eight enemy prisoners brought in. Our casualties high, morale low. Suffered enemy artillery fire 1700 to 2400. The officer who had refused to allow his men to surrender to us earlier in the day was found dead in LaBarre.
