For distinguishing himself by heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 16 December 1944, in Lendersdorf, Germany. Sergeant Sgambati his two men on outpost duty received orders lay down a mine field and also protect it. Visibility was poor, and they unhesitantly moved to the edge of the minefield for better observation. When the enemy counter-attacked in this sector, Sergeant Sgambati gave the alarm and he and his men slowed down the enemy's advance. Enemy grenades set off the mine fields and Sergeant Sgambati and his two men were instantly killed. The enemy also caught in the mine field explosion were killed or retreated in disorder.
