Staff Sgt. George Gaydush is listed in the memoirs of Capt. Harry C. Gravelyn, Co. D, 331st as being section leader for the 2nd section of the 3rd Platoon Mortar in July 1944. Since S/Sgt. George Gaydush was killed in action at the end of the war it might be possible that this was no longer the case at that time.

This URL shows the citation for George Gaydush’s Distinguished Service Cross commendation from Headquarters, Third U.S. Army, General Orders No. 261:

Staff Sergeant George Gaydush (ASN: 33038908), United States Army, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company D, 331st Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 18 April 1945. Staff Sergeant Gaydush's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 83d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
