For distinguishing himself by heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States on 16 December 1944, in Lendersdorf, Germany. Private Cline and two other members of an outpost received orders to protect a mine field. Visibility was poor, and they unhesitantly moved to the edge of the minefield for better observation. When the enemy counter-attacked in this sector, Private Cline began firing his BAR, and with the aid of two others, was able to slow up the enemy's advance. Enemy grenades set off the mine fields and Private Cline, and the two other men were killed. The enemy also caught in the mine field explosion were killed or retreated in disorder.
