For gallantry in action on 10 July 1944, near ***, France. The advance of friendly tanks was temporarily halted by a hedgerow. Private First Class Barnes, acting on his own initiative and under intense enemy fire, crawled 100 yards to the hedgerow dragging 50 pounds of TNT. From a prone position he dug into the hedgerow placing the charge and then set it off. Through the resulting gap the tanks were enabled to advance and continue the attack. The initiative, grim determination, and coolness under fire of Private First Class Barnes reflect great credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the armed forces of the United States. Entered military service from Pennsylvania. |
