Roger B Cross was born on 8 Jul 1916 in Chicago, Cook County, IL. His parents were Stephen Anthony Cross, who was born in Illinois, and Edna Marie Cross (nee Smith), who also was born in Illinois. Roger had a brother, James.

When Roger registered for the draft on 16 Oct 1940 in Chicago,he listed his residence as Hyattsville, Prince George’s County, MD, but he was working for his father’s law firm in Chicago. He joined the US Army on 7 Jan 1944 in Baltimore, MD, and was sent to Fort George G Meade in Maryland and joined the 83rd Infantry Division on August 16, 1944.
