Captain Clifford McCarthy was briefly the Commanding Officer of 2nd Battalion, 329th Infantry before his death. After that Granville A. Sharpe was the battalion commander. Captain McCarthy was KIA in Chateauneuf d'Ille-et-Vilaine (Brittany), near St Malo. This information can be found on page 66 and 67 of Sharpe's Battalion in World War 2 which can be downloaded here.

Captain McCarthy was a member of the Headquarters 2nd Battalion. The morning report of Headquarters 3rd Battalion for July 19, 1944 on page 19 lists him reassigned to HQ 2nd Battalion. The morning report of Headquarters 2nd Battalion for July 19, 1944 on page 19 lists him joining Headquarters 2nd Battalion.

General Order 16 lists his commendation for a Silver Star:

Captain Clifford J. McCarthy, O-370387, Infantry United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy on 7 July 1944 near *****, France. Captain McCarthy, as Battalion S-3, was given the mission of guiding the tanks in a tank-infantry attack. Other means of communication having failed, Captain McCarthy proceeded forward from objective to objective, constantly exposing himself to the fire of snipers and entrenched enemy infantry. His utter disregard for his own safety, and his initiative and aggressiveness were an inspiration to the officers and men of his battalion. His inspired leadership wa in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service. Entered military service from Connecticut.
