Second Lieutenant Kleppin was in command of a platoon ordered to cross the ***** River and enfilade the enemy in support of two assault platoons. Completely disregarding blanketing enemy fire of all kinds he repeatedly exposed himself in order to encourage his men to vigorously press the attack. Although he was wounded three times by enemy machine gun fire he refused to go to the rear. His outstanding courage and heroic leadership inspired his men to attack the enemy with such aggressiveness that the assault platoons were able to win the objective. Second Lieutenant Kleppin's conspicuous bravery and initiative reflect the highest credit upon himsmelf and the finest traditions of the military service of the United States. Entered military service from South Dakota. |
